December 6th - More Rankin-Bass

More Obscure Holiday Specials

I actually really like this one. Jack Frost, we all know who this guy is, falls in love with a human woman. So Father Winter let's him go down to Earth to try and win her heart. But like in most stories this girl is the only desirable girl in town so the evil overlord, more accurately the evil Cossack King, Kubla Kraus, wants the girl for himself. Obviously antics ensue. One thing to note, Buddy Hackett narrates, he plays the groundhog.

And now we come to
Nestor, The Long-Eared Christmas Donkey.

This one, like the Little Drummer Boy (don't me started on his creepy existence) this special is extremely sad and somewhat disturbing. Nestor is a baby donkey living in Rome with his mother. As the title indicates he has very long ears. When Roman soldiers come to buy donkeys, ay trying to sell Nestor, who was wearing socks to hide his ears, is cheating them.So he farmer Olaf to have to give all the donkeys for free. Except Nestor who is left behind and gets kicked out into a winter storm. His mother comes to his rescue and dies from hypothermia in her sleep. See I told you, disturbing. An angel, Tilly, comes o his so he doesn't fall into a depression, to tell him god has a plan for him. Because of course Mary and Joseph end up needing a donkey and donkey who can hear his way to Bethlehem through a sandstorm, right? So yeah That is Nestor. He is super cute but has a horrible life.
